Our Sustainability Commitment

The Full Story

We recognize our responsibility to engage in business in an ethical manner and in a way that considers the impact of a design and design decisions on the community, the environment, and the people who will engage with the space.

There are several elements along which Studio Tela takes a sustainable approach.  Our approach is guided by recognized organizations and their tools such as B Lab's B Corp Certification process and The United Nation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Design

Our priority is designing spaces that create memorable experiences and have practical applications.  Human centered design is at the heart of all our design decisions and at the same time we take into account environmental impact in a design.  How will the orientation of a room and placement of walls, windows, vents, skylights have an impact on the amount of energy needed to operate this space?  What materials can be incorporated for the least amount of immediate environmental impact and long-term environmental impact?

Teamwork

Addressing the critical sustainability aspects of a project means involving everyone – clients, communities and partners.  Every voice matters; It is only through collaboration that we can come up with a better result.  Our approach is highly collaborative, we will never force an idea on you or the contractor or the master craftsman, and we will take the time to explain the advantages or disadvantages of different design decisions.

Our working process is integral to this design philosophy: a collective approach grounded in deep curiosity, exploration and learning.  We respond to the unique challenges of each project by building on our many experiences and exploring new possibilities.

Materials

Every design project has moments when a decision needs to be made whether to restore or replace.  We try our best to look for ways to reuse and restore objects and buildings.  Removing an original element from a building that was built 100+ years ago is removing a piece of art and history.  You may be surprised at how much value and purpose these items have.  Removing original material has a ripple effect on the overall health of a building and should not be done lightly.  It also means more waste going to the landfill and more production and transportation impact to bring new material to the site.  Help us make a difference and let us advise you on how to restore and reuse your objects and material for a truly unique and environmentally friendly result.

We also put an emphasis on buying local and buying from companies that have a mission to operate sustainably and show their commitment through engagement with organizations like B-Corp and the Fair Labor Association.

Another key tenant of our sourcing is to look for items that are made with natural materials and low environmental impact and less negative human health impact.  Choosing products, such as low-VOC paints and natural finishes, that do not release harmful chemicals into the indoor environment.

SDG: Guide For Architects and Building Professionals
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 global targets aimed at promoting prosperity and well-being for all while protecting the environment. For architects, interior designers, and construction professionals, understanding and aligning with these goals is crucial. By integrating sustainable practices into their business, they can create greener, healthier environments and meet the evolving needs of their clients. The SDGs are interconnected, meaning progress in one area can positively impact others. For example, designing energy-efficient buildings can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting sustainable cities.
